Guide · Extra income · Independent activity
Becoming a referral partner Status, steps and the real questions to ask yourself before you start.
Looking for a sales job, a freelance assignment or simply some extra income? Referral work can be part of it, as long as you know what it really is: an independent activity, paid on commission, with no salary. Here are the essentials, with no promises.
What is a referral partner?
A referral partner connects a company with future clients. They don't sell themselves, don't sign any contract on behalf of the company and don't collect any money: they recommend, introduce, pass on a link. When the person introduced becomes a client, they earn a commission set in advance.
The activity requires no diploma and no stock. On the other hand, it offers no guaranteed income: you only get paid if the clients you introduce buy, and as long as they keep paying when the commission is recurring.
Salaried job, sales agent or referral partner: what changes
Many ads mix up these three situations. Yet they don't have the same relationship with the company, or the same protection.
| Salaried salesperson (permanent, fixed-term, sales rep) | Sales agent | Referral partner | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Relationship with the company | Employment contract | Permanent mandate, self-employed | Simple introduction, self-employed |
| What they do | Sells according to the employer's instructions | Negotiates, and sometimes signs, on behalf of the company | Introduces clients, without signing anything for the company |
| Compensation | Salary, sometimes with a variable part | Commissions | Commissions only |
| Formalities | None: the employer handles the declarations | Registration in the special register of sales agents | Self-employed status (often a micro-business) to get paid |
Looking for a permanent or fixed-term sales job?
Let's be clear: a referral partner program is not a job offer. There is no minimum wage, no paid leave and no protection from an employment contract. If your priority is a stable income, look for a salaried position first.
Referral work makes sense in other situations:
- You already meet professionals in your work (field sales, multi-brand rep, supplier, trainer, website creator) and a useful recommendation fits naturally into your conversations.
- You're already self-employed and want an extra source of income, at your own pace, with no stock or investment.
- You have a network (business club, association, circle of freelancers) that a tool can genuinely help.
Are you an employee? The activity is often still possible on the side, if your employment contract doesn't contain an exclusivity clause and you don't recommend a competitor of your employer.
The steps to get paid, one by one
- 1. Choose a self-employed status. There is no status specific to referral partners. To get started, many choose the micro-business status: simplified accounting and contributions calculated on what you receive.
- 2. Register the activity online. Registration is done on the single portal for business formalities; you then receive a SIRET number. The classification of the activity and the tax regime depend on your situation: if in doubt, ask when you register or ask URSSAF.
- 3. Read the terms in writing. Rate, calculation basis, commission duration, payout threshold, cases where it stops: everything must be written down before you recommend anything.
- 4. Invoice and declare. Each commission requires an invoice, then is declared in your revenue. Some programs issue the invoice for you (self-billing).
These guidelines are general and don't replace personalized advice. The official rules are detailed on government websites (service-public.fr, URSSAF).
How to spot a serious program
Good signs
- Free sign-up, with no required purchase.
- Commission calculated on real payments from real clients.
- Rate, duration and payout threshold published before sign-up.
- No exclusivity or imposed quota.
- A product you could recommend to a friend.
Warning signs
- Entry fees, a “starter kit” or paid training.
- Earnings paid just for recruiting other people.
- An ad presented as a “job” with no employment contract.
- Income amounts promised in advance.
- Terms that aren't written down anywhere.
The Calendrio referral program, clearly explained
Calendrio is an online calendar and client file for freelancers and small businesses: hairdressers, beauticians, wellness practitioners, coaches, lawyers, trainers… If you work with any of them, you can recommend it with your personal link.
- 30 % of what each professional you bring pays, for life: as long as they stay subscribed (Calendrio and Calendrio Prospection subscriptions).
- An example calculation, not a promise: a professional on the Pro plan (39 € excl. VAT per month) represents 11,70 € per month; a salon on the Team plan (79 € excl. VAT per month), 23,70 € per month. During the professional's free trial, there is no commission.
- Free sign-up, with no exclusivity or quota. Your link is remembered for 90 days on the professional's device.
- Automatic payouts to your bank account once 20 € is due; the invoice is issued for you. A SIRET number is required to get paid.
- Recruiting other referral partners earns nothing in itself: only a small team bonus applies to clients actually brought in by your team.
It's an independent activity: possible extra income, not a salary. You only earn if professionals choose Calendrio and stay subscribed.
Frequently asked questions about referral work
Is being a referral partner a job?
No. It's an independent activity: you have no employment contract, no fixed salary and no set hours. You are paid only through commissions on the sales you make possible. If you're looking for a permanent or fixed-term job, this is a way to add to your income, not a replacement.
Can you be a referral partner while being an employee?
Generally yes, as long as you respect your employment contract: check that it doesn't contain an exclusivity clause and don't recommend a product that competes with your employer. Commissions are declared separately, under your self-employed status.
What legal status do I need to get paid?
There is no status specific to referral partners. For a regular activity, many choose the micro-business status, registered online on the single portal for business formalities, which gives you a SIRET number. The exact classification of the activity and the tax regime depend on your situation: check them when you register or with URSSAF.
How much does a referral partner earn?
It depends entirely on the product, the commission rate and the number of clients you actually bring in: the income may be zero. Be wary of any offer that promises you a specific amount. With Calendrio, the calculation is public: 30% of what each professional you bring pays, i.e. 11,70 € per month for a Pro subscription at 39 € excl. VAT, as long as they stay subscribed.
What's the difference with a sales agent?
A sales agent has a permanent mandate: they negotiate, and sometimes sign, contracts on behalf of the company they represent, and they register in the special register of sales agents. A referral partner only puts people in touch: they sign nothing on behalf of the company.
Do I have to pay to join a referral program?
A serious program is free. Sign-up fees, a kit to buy or earnings paid just for recruiting other people are warning signs. The Calendrio program is free and never pays for recruitment alone.
